FLORAL COUTURE - 1st February 2012
When the images came through from the Paris Couture Spring Summer 2012 shows obviously everyone was talking about Jean Paul Gaultier (some say insensitive) homage to Amy Winehouse. We on the other hand were quietly celebrating the fact that Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, who now head the design team at Valentino are producing some incredibly beautiful work.
We took notice at their S/S 2012 ready to wear show last September when ethereal models wore full-length dresses in nudes and iconic Valentino red, many with intricate lace and applique details. This use of sumptuous amounts of fabric was magically escalated for their couture offering. This collection was inspired by an 18th century Marie Antoinette, full of delicate floral chintz, smocking, full skirts and floor length dresses in pale off whites, pinks and cornflower blues.
The collection sparked something in our minds as we realised the collection is reminiscent of the designs produced by Laura Ashley during the 1970s-1980s. They were known throughout this period for the use of romantic, floral print dresses. We’ve compiled an gallery of archive Laura Ashley images to show the similarities!

HOME & AWAY - 10th January 2012
19 year self-taught sonic talent, Gabrielle Alpin has been tipped as ‘the’ next big thing for 2012 that Ed Sheeran’s lyric, "They say I'm up-and-coming like I'm in an elevator" rings true for her too! Listen to any of her vocals on YouTube (6 million people have already) and you’ll see why such praise is richly and honestly deserved. There's no over-production here my friends, just pure vocal capability combined with natural and inherent song writing talent.
Hazel joined Gabrielle in Dalston whilst she performed the title track from her EP ‘Home’ (wearing Rag & Bow) for The Mahogany Blog. The EP was released on Monday (available on iTunes) and is already number 13 in its uk album chart. Check out her performance as we really don’t need to say anything more….
Oh...although we obviously love the vintage family photograph on the EP's cover, she’s touring the UK in March and check out her video for 'Home'...OK finished!
PRETTY POLY - 6th January 2012
Model…that word conjuers up a host of imagery but thanks to her avalanche of advertising campaigns, editorials and catwalks shows, Russian model Natasha Poly can put ‘super’ in front of it. As predicted she will be all over the bulging pages of this seasons major fashion magazines appearing in a myriad of campaigns. We are particularly finding this combination of Poly, mid-century chairs, Proneza Schouler’s spring collection and famed photographer Willy Vanderperr an aesthetically tantalising mix.
She also stars in one of the most retrospectively evovocative campaigns of the season by Prada. Shot by Steven Meisel it also features Kati Nescher, Meghan Collison, Elise Crombez, Ymre Stiekema and Kathryn Kruger...phew!
Oh Poly what a wonderful world you live in!
